Becoming Catholic

Are you interested in becoming Catholic or learning more about the Catholic faith?

The Catholic Church welcomes all those who are seeking to know Jesus Christ and discover the fullness of life found in His Church. Whether you have never been baptized, were baptized in another Christian tradition, or were baptized Catholic but have not received all of the Sacraments of Initiation, the Church invites you to explore the Catholic faith and consider taking the next step in your journey.

Becoming Catholic is a process of prayer, learning, and spiritual growth. Through this journey, individuals come to better understand the teachings of Jesus Christ, the beauty of the Catholic Church, and what it means to live as a disciple.

The normal process for adults who wish to become Catholic is called OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation of Adults). OCIA is the process through which adults explore the Catholic faith, prepare to receive the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist), and enter into full communion with the Catholic Church.

The OCIA journey includes:

  • Inquiry: A time to ask questions, learn about the Catholic faith, and discern whether God is calling you to take the next step.

  • Catechesis: A period of deeper learning about Scripture, Church teachings, prayer, the Sacraments, and Christian life.

  • Spiritual Formation: A time of prayer and preparation as you grow in your relationship with Christ and His Church.

  • Receiving the Sacraments: Those who are ready may receive Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil and enter fully into the life of the Catholic Church.

ABOUT THE PROCESS OF BECOMING CATHOLIC

  • God calls every person to Himself. The desire to seek truth, meaning, and a deeper relationship with God is often the beginning of a person's journey toward the Catholic Church.

  • The Catholic Church is founded by Jesus Christ. Catholics believe that Jesus established the Church to continue His mission of teaching, sanctifying, and leading people into communion with God.

  • Baptism is the beginning of Christian life. Those who have not been baptized receive the Sacrament of Baptism, becoming members of the Body of Christ and receiving new life in Him.

  • Confirmation strengthens our relationship with Christ. Through Confirmation, baptized Christians receive a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit and are strengthened to live and share their faith.

  • The Eucharist is the source and summit of Catholic life. In the Eucharist, Catholics receive Jesus Christ truly present — Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity.

  • Becoming Catholic is not simply joining an organization. It is entering into a relationship with Jesus Christ and becoming part of His family, the Church.
