St. John's Altar Server Announcements

To become an Altar Server you must be at least in the 5th grade and attend three, one hour, training sessions. These sessions usually occur during Lent.

If you are interested in becoming an Altar Server, please contact the coordinator.

You will be notified of the next training opportunity. While you are waiting for your training, pay special attention on Sundays to what the servers are doing. Start studying their actions along with when and how they perform them.

What to Expect
  • Upon completion of training you will be placed on the schedule by the mass of your preference.
  • The schedule is prepared two months in advance.
  • Advance noticed is requested of all vacations or weekends away. This will help us ensure we don’t schedule your child for a weekend you are gone.
  • The schedule is posted in the sacristy and emailed out to everyone on the roster.
  • Holidays, Holy Days, Advent & Lenten celebrations are scheduled separately from the “Weekend Mass Schedule”.
  • An email will be sent out ahead of time to find volunteers.

Did you know, St. John’s enlists the assistance of Altar Servers 12 times each weekend? That is 624 times each year! Did you know, Altar Serving is not only a weekend “thing”? Altar servers are called to assist the clergy at Mass during Lent, Holy Days / Advent / Holy Week, all Sacramental Masses (First Communion, Confirmation, etc) and Stations of the Cross. If you add up all the opportunities to assist there are close to 800 slots each year that need filling!

Altar Servers are called to serve by the Holy Spirit. Some of them receive the call themselves, some of them serve based on their parents wishes. No matter how they are called, serving on the altar and assisting the priest with the proceeds of the mass is a blessing and should be cherished.
