Fr. Michael J. McGivney was so concerned about the plight of widows and children when the
family breadwinner passed away leaving the family destitute, that he founded the Knights of
Columbus in order to protect them.
In keeping with that original focus, a few of the St. John
Francis Regis KoC Council 7914 wives decided to do more for our widows and modified the
men’s “Take a Priest to Breakfast” program to occasionally host a brunch social for our widows.
Since that time, we’ve opened our group to any St. Mary’s County KoC wives, widows and St.
John’s parish friends who want to participate. We have added evening/weekend social events
to allow more ladies the opportunity to attend. For example, we have enjoyed tasty food and
fine hospitality from the Dexters at the Victorian Candle. The participants quickly
decided to expand our role to help those less fortunate. Following the example
of the KoC MD State Council ladies, in 2009, we made dolls for patients at
Children’s Hospital and blankets for the folks at the Charlotte Hall Veterans’
Home. In 2010, we held a raffle for a romantic weekend at the Victorian Candle B
and B, raising almost $1,000 for The Relay For Life.
We are an informal group – no dues, no by-laws, no officers. We normally meet Fridays after 8:00 a.m. Mass about every three or four months in the St. Jude
Room or the St. Therese Room in the Msgr. Harris Center for our brunch social.
