Fr. Michael J. McGivney was so concerned about the plight of widows and children when the family breadwinner passed away leaving the family destitute, that he founded the Knights of Columbus in order to protect them. In keeping with that original focus, a few of the St. John Francis Regis KoC Council 7914 wives decided to do more for our widows and modified the men’s “Take a Priest to Breakfast” program to occasionally treat our widows to a brunch social. Since that time, we’ve opened our group to any St. Mary’s County KoC wives, widows and St. John’s parish friends who want to participate. We have added evening/weekend social events to allow more ladies the opportunity to attend. We are an informal group – no dues, no by-laws, no officers. The participants quickly decided to expand our role to help those less fortunate. Following the example of the KoC MD State Council ladies, we made dolls for patients at Children’s Hospital and blankets for the folks at the Charlotte Hall Veterans’ Home. In January 2010, we will host a ‘baby shower’ where all gifts will be given to Care Net Pregnancy Center.
We normally meet Fridays after 8:00 am Mass about every two or three months in the St. Jude Room.
